Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2013 Verified Purchase This movie was recommended by my wife, who is Russian, and watched this when she still lived in Russia. It was so well made by a famous Russian director (Nikita Mikhalkov), who actually appears in the Movie as the Czar, that it is virtually hard to distinguish it from an American film. He also produced and wrote this film. The scene is set in pre-Russian Revolution period at the turn of the last century. The story is of a beautiful American woman(Julia Ormond),who plays a courtesan, that was hired by an eccentric Entrepreneur (Richard Harris), to come to Russia to seduce a Russian officer into allowing him to use his invention to cut down trees in Siberia, hence the name (The Barber of Siberia). Instead, she meets and falls in love with a cadet officer(Oleg Menshikov), on a train during her travels into Russia, then the story goes on from there. The story plays out in such a way that it is so entertaining in how it shows and compares Russian culture and tradition in almost all aspect of their comedy, to their most intimate feelings, and how the love affair that blossomed was taken very seriously for the man, but was not as much for the woman at first. It is hysterically funny most of the time, and then very sad at some points. Such a roller coaster ride of a love story! I don't want to be a spoiler, so I will just tell you that you will NOT be disappointed. It is so colorful, beautiful locations in Russia, beautiful scenes and lighting, and the story is outstanding! The movie is about 3 hours long too, but it doesn't seem that, because you are so drawn into the story and everything in it! Brilliantly made film in all aspects! If it were an American film it would have won Oscars GALORE! It did win the 1999 Cannes Film Festival Award though! Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2009 Verified Purchase If you like romance and a bit of history - it is a great movie to watch! Although I was able to watch it only on my computer (due to region I think), I emnoyed it very much. If you are at all interested in culture of good old Russia - this movie gives you a good idea about what it use to be like before soviets, although I should say that Maslenniza is still widely celebrated and some people go into "zapoi" in modern times. Great for big screen TV for some scenes are just breathtaking. This movie has been one of my favorite since it came out.LOVE IT! Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2013 Verified Purchase One reviewer has accurately pointed out that more than a superficial understanding of Russian history allows appreciation of this movie. The lead actor Metchnikoff has appeared in other films, notably the French "East-West" and others. It is interesting to me that he is as fluent in English as he is with his first language, Russian, a skill with which not many western matinee idols can boast. Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2013 Verified Purchase I bought this primarily as a gift for my daughter. It was a movie she had enjoyed so much that she wanted her own copy. I haven't watched it but she was very happy to get it. Of course delivery was very quick. My wife is Russian, so she she appreciates some of the ironies of Russian humor which I miss.
As for the acting, the costumes, cinematography, etc. I find it to be one of my all time favourites. I do feel that in order to understand this film itself it would require that one has experienced such passion in life...

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugely Enjoyable Period Romp in Tsarist Russia

I bought this because I absolutely adore Nikita Mikhalkov's earlier films Urga and Dark Eyes. This being a comedy I was hoping for the same sense of whimsy as well as the exuberance of Dark Eyes. And I was not disappointed. The Barber of Siberia is a little slow at first, and I didn't know what to make of the bizarre scene in the American military camp, but once the film got going with the actual story I was hooked. This is a hugely enjoyable film, a spectacular period romp set in tsarist Russia, filmed on elaborate sets with a huge cast. I loved the vibrant colours and the hilarity of the slapstick scenes. Julia Ormond is wonderful as is the Russian actor who plays her love interest. Richard Harris has very little screen time, which is a pity, and I quite enjoyed Mikhalkov's megalomaniac "cameo" as the tsar. At just under 3 hours this is a long film, and it is a bit of a mess insofar as it never seems to quite make up its mind if it wants to be a romantic drama with a historical background or farce. The romance wanders between lighthearted romcom and melancholy drama. If you expect a meaningful historical drama, you will likely be disappointed. If you want to sit back and while away a long wet afternoon in front of the telly with a bit of offbeat escapism with high production standards, go for it. This is like a Disney version of tsarist Russia and it's great fun. The DVD I purchased is a letterbox version for a 4:3 screen format. Watching it on a modern widescreen TV, you get broad black bars on all four sides of the screen and it takes a bit of fiddling with the zoom to figure out how to get the largest possible picture without losing part on the image on the sides or distorting the proportions. Another possible drawback is the absence of subtitles except for those parts of the dialogue which are spoken in Russian.

Barber of Siberia remains one of Mihalkov's masterpieces. I saw this movie on TV around Christmas and the story (and interpretation, as well) was so touchy that I said that this movie is a must have in your DVD library. Now, that I got it, I feel good knowing that I can enjoy seeing it anytime I want. I highly recommend anyone seeing it. It is a reference movie for the Russian cinematography!
4.0 out of 5 stars Russia for Beginners

Confusing, the plot wanders, time changes, but the costumes, scenery, buildings of Moscow and trees of Siberia all merge into a view of 19th C. Russia that is most enticing. Even modern Russians retain that heedless romanticism that makes this film so appealing.
